Residential Roofing Shingles
Asphalt Composition shingles and Wood Shake are the most common roofing material used in residential
roofing and other “Steep and Sloped Applications” worldwide.
Composition Shingles are made of carrier sheets of organic or fiberglass coated with asphalt and granulated in
a wide array of colors. Some asphalt shingles are made to look like wood shingles. Many shingle manufacturers
have met Energy Star Requirements with certain product lines and are eligible for tax credits.
Residential Roofing Wood Shingles
Wood Shingles are typically made of cedar and usually are fire treated with a fire retardant, and are used more
commonly in areas where the climate is usually of low humidity. Split wood shakes are aesthetically pleasing
and long lasting. Shakes, due to their rough look, are desired in certain architecture concepts. They are also
more timely to install than typical shingle applications and sometimes are installed for decorative purposes with
another roof underneath them when it is a low sloped application.
Slate & Tile Residential Roofing
Slate roofs have been used in many applications, worldwide. Slate ages very well on residential roofing
applications. However, slate application is very specialized, with less contractors specializing in this type of
material installation.
Flat / Low Sloped Residential Roofing Systems
In many cases, there are flat roofs on residential roofing structures. Please refer to the Low Slope Commercial,
Industrial and Institutional page for further information about residential roofing systems.
